Benefits of different hull designs

I was wondering if there's a defacto resource on the benefits of different hull designs?

We've always like the Clippers, and particularly the Gozzard, Cabo Rico, and Bayfields.

Could someone shed some light on this for me? I'm a rookie and just wanting to learn about the technical aspects of sailboats, as well as the practical. By comparison how would a Tayana 37 and Bayfield/Gozzard 36 sailing characteristics compare?
