What's the year of my boat?

We bought our hull and deck in 1976 and hopefully our boat will be complete in 2009. What is the year for all legal papers, registration, insurance, etc.

Did the hull have a VIN number? (Transom upper starboard side) If so I think that the year coded in the VIN is the year to be used for registration etc. Perhaps not unlike buying a 1976 automobile that had never been on the road. It is still registered as a '76. A call to you DMV should get the "real" answer.

DMarina—

It is likely that your boat will be a 1976 boat, since that is what the HIN number that was issued to it will reflect. You really should talk to a maritime lawyer to get the specifics right.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
