...I pay $50.00 for a quart of paint and feel like I'm getting a deal.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Plexus plastic polish, over $1.50 an ounce ($20 for 13oz.), you'd think they were selling a good single malt scotch. By the way I just paid more than $50for a bottle of 16 yr old Lagavulin Scotch Single Malt to keep on the boat, its 750ML so at least I feel like I got my money's worth.

VC-17. Pretty well the standard here in Ontario - low growth environment.

It's not that I mind spending money on the boat - but as sales volume goes down chandlery prices have been rising to maintain profits.

The independents are losing some of the goodwill they've built up over the years. The economy is starting to tank here now as well. I think some of them are going to fold. Unfortunate but they're all using a very dated business model. The internet has changed the way we buy things. There is a big hole in the market right now for a Canadian "Defender Industries" or "Sailnet Store".

Pride Marine (Ottawa-based) is trying to grab that slot, but their on-liine product base is not extensive enough.

How are the independents faring down there ?

When I was a kid, there was no way you could convince me that when it rained in Australia that the rain drops actually hit the ground. My understanding of gravity and physics at that age told me that down under it rained up!

This is true. I picked up a copy of the excellent Practical Boat Owner magazine (published in the UK) and all the numbers seemed identical in pounds as to the Canadian dollar in terms of price, an 80% markup.
