topping lift?

Last dec. I purchased a 30' pearson coaster w/ harken furller.
The way this is rigged is the fuller halyard goes thru the mast sheath an then to the boom to become the boom topping lift. I question if this is correct.
I have not seen this before. Harken says not to make the halyard too tight. This system seems to me to be inconststant. Does anyone have an opinion.

What you describe is highly doubtful.. and if true is rigged incorrectly. Very much so.

Far more likely that your furler/jib halyard goes down the inside of the mast, and another adjustable line is your topping lift. I'd be amazed if in fact the same line goes through the masthead sheaves and down to the boom. Pictures would help here....

when i purchased the boat the mast and standing rigging was up. The halyard for the furler is small in diameter and has a spliced eye . It then travels thru the mast and at some point is spliced into 1/2" double braide that runs through a block at end of boom into a clam on the boom.
I did not think this is correct . so I removed the line line from the boom
and secured it to the mast. I just dont understand why the difference in the halyard thcikness . I have 2 other halyards that I am assuming are for other sails (the angle to the mast is incorrect for the furler rap) Thanks again. kirk

The Halyard for the fuller and the boom topping lift must be separate. You need to be able to adjust each item independently of each other. For some good info on how the topping lift should be rigged I would refer you to a book “The Ocean Sailing Yacht” by Donald M. Street, Jr., pages 180, 181 and 183. This book by Don Street is a bit out of date, copyrighted in 1973; it does have some great info and will give you a good place to start.

I also own a Coaster and it is a great go any-where boat.
