Trip Planning

I am planning on cruising north for 2010 in my 46 foot sloop. I plan on leaving from Newport and spend a couple of weeks in Cuttyhunk, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket area around Memorial weekend and early June.
I have never sailed the area before and I am looking for some advise.

Weather, Best Harbors, Marinas, etc...

Thanks:)

If you think "cruising north" is Massachusetts, expect to be cold. Really cold, especially in early June. We were in Newport last summer in late July and it got up to 70F on the hot day, when it didn't rain and was only foggy. Memorial Day weekend is likely quite busy. If you head off somewhere it will be a good idea to have a mooring reserved at the harbor you're going to. Planning this far ahead means you have the time to read some books like Coast of Summer by Antony Bailey and Sloop by Daniel Robb, which will give you a feel for the area, besides the authors' mentions of various harbors and their good and bad points. The Embassy Cruising guides are also quite useful for this part of the coast. For more details on the harbors, it would be helpful to know how much you draw.

Hi,

You need this book:

The Coast of Summer: Sailing New ... - Google Books

It describes the areas you are interesting in (and it's a good read).

Good luck,
Barry
