Sailing in The Charleston SC area
I am thinking of relocating our boat from Lake MI (Chicago) to Charleston SC. This seems to be a nice option since we will be moving to Atlanta. Any thoughts on Marinas, and Sailing in that area?

Many choices with virtually year round racing organization...marinas...City Marina...Ashley if mast height less than 55''...Patriot''s Point and Cooper River...nice cruising up and down the coast to various barrier islands and the Bahamas are only 3 days away

Ahoy Vinman. I lived aboard for two years at Buzzard''s Roost Marina on John''s Island in Charleston. Only those now living aboard will be able to live aboard and no new people will be allowed to live aboard because they are phasing out live aboard. But, if you do not plan to live aboard it is a good marina, reasonable, has a good restaurant, Cappy''s, and is in a good location close to anything you need while still being off the beaten path generally. It is on the Stono River and fairly well protected. City Marina is expensive and you will be under a microscope and not be as private or comfortable. There is also a marina at Folly Beach you might check out. You will love Charleston. Good Luck. dhd

I spent a month in Charleston anchored off the City Marina... the sailing there is incredible, but much of the shoreline between the city marina and the coast guard staion is mud flats at low tide, and most of the harbor has a 6-7'' tidal range, so you have to time your arrivals and departures accordingly - its quite common for there to be a dozen boats sitting anchored in the mud (mine among them, several times)
