I am sure in my youth and even now I could earn a Darwin award nomination.
As I understand from reading on a (sadly) forgotten coast gaurd related site, If they aren't in the air for a search and rescue, they are in the air for training or observation. So a real search allows ACTUAL practice, not mere training runs.

I for one find little to fault in someone who is trying to learn being rescued, I do have issues with many 'highly experienced' people who have called for rescue with truly minor complaints. (Of which there have been many examples on sailnet.)

Ken.
I don't know the geography or distances involved when they were "learning" but it still seems to me that if your learning you do it in an area close to shore and get some practice first.

It's like when I used to go four wheel driving, I've lost count of the number of times I had to rescue some "weekend warrior" that had just bought themselves a vehicle and decided to hit the tracks with no knowledge and no preparation or equipment in the vehicle.

Think I've got a new saying. "Modern technology and society protects the stupid"

The Coast Guard dose not have unlimited resources and each SAR mission that is not needed endangers those who may require assistance. Below are some of the cost listed on the CG Hoax page.
  • Each hour a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft is aloft costs about $3,700 - and several may be used in a single search.
  • Our medium size ships, referred to as cutters, cost roughly $1,550 an hour to run.
  • Even a U.S. Coast Guard small boat costs between $300 and $400 per hour to operate.

Float Plan Central: SAR Hoaxes and False Alarms

Appears the CG is very cost conscience.

I have no problem with a couple of youn men learning to sail but the method they chose to use to learn was not the best. Part of learning is knowing that you start out not knowing anything and build up to bigger challenges. They had no clear understanding of their undertaking.

How many stories have we read over the years of 10,20,30 yr experienced sailors do something that cost them their boat at best & in many case their life. Now, having said that, if they leave SF on their next adventure without proper safety, communication, nav gear and a little experience, then all the favorite terms of endearment shall apply
