And Marvin Creamer circumnavigated with no instruments at all, not even a chronometer. He looked at clouds, swells, sea and air life, rising and setting of the sun. He eyeballed zenith observations to get latitude.

Yes but it's also true to say that Cook charted (even thought he may not necessarily have discovered) half the world before he finally became someone's dinner.

Ships don't carry flux gate compasses if they have a gyro compass. And they all carry magnetic compasses. The flux gate is a deficient attempt at providing the electronic outputs of a gyro compass without the gyro's inherent accuracy. For most sailors though, it's all we've got for the purpose.
