top 10 weather websites?
I am not a sailor, but I am a pilot. I found some better that the generic weather analysis tools like Intellicast and The Weather Channel. If you know where to look, NOAA has many great professional sites. I think you will find the information below helpful in general.
Your specific question may be addressed in the site "Tracing eddies in the Gulf of Mexico with altimetry " (see below).
(1) NOAA/National Weather Service/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (http://wwwt.ncep.noaa.gov/) has a Marine Prediction Center link (http://www.mpc.ncep.noaa.gov/)
(2) Marine/Weather Related Sites
Has a link to Current Velocities of the Gulf Stream (Gulf Stream velocity fields are derived from near-realtime radar altimeter data of the European Remote Sensing Satellite ERS-2.): http://www.deos.tudelft.nl/altim/gulfstream/.
(3) This is part of http://www.deos.tudelft.nl/altim/gulfstream/related.html, which have very colorful charts:
Near-Real Time Sea Level
Real Time Altimetry from ERS-2 (3rd ERS-2 Symposium, Florence)
Full description of real time altimeter data processing by NOAA, UCAR and DEOS (status 1997)
Topex Global Data (NOAA)
TOPEX near real-time results
Gulf of Mexico (Univ. Colorado)
Tracing eddies in the Gulf of Mexico with altimetry
Gulf Stream velocities (DEOS)
Near real-time maps of Gulf Stream velocities
The Gulf Stream Voyage (CIESE Online Classroom Projects)
An investigation of Ocean Currents for grades K-12
(4) I found these sites through my aviation weather links, which you might also find helpful:
Aviation Digital data Service: http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/projects/adds/progs/ has decent prognostic charts (that quickly download) and good Doppler radar besides the usual aviation weather products.
Fair winds and clear skies,
