Actually it wasn't my car. I left some painted parts to soak in gasoline for a while to clean them. When I took them out the paint had turned to goo.

Cam, thanks for the information. I'll try to to 'shut the hell up' as you request.

Yeah, I had something similar happen when I left my crescent wrench in a can of water. Even the can rusted. That's why they don't make ships out of steel.

I think every Navy in the world would disagree with you on that one.

USN ships (as well as those of other countries) suffer bimetallic corrosion, which is what I suspect you observed. The point where the aluminum superstructure met the steel deck developed what the shipyard called "mouse holes" if corrosion wasn't countered promptly with preservation and painting.

The sailor to whom you replied holds a Master Mariner's License, I believe. I think he knows these things He was making a (subtle, I assume, guz it went over my head) point .

No doubt the subtle suggestion was that I had foolishly left the parts soaking in gasoline too long (just as a steel wrench left in water will eventually rust away).

Ah. Yes, I am relatively new. Excuse me while I extract my foot from my mouth and remove the egg on my face.
