How to hold reefer lids on at sea?

Hi all. we''re rebuilding our galley. Reefer lids are drop-in, not hinged, and flush with the countertop. Anyone have any great ideas for holding lids on in the event of knockdown? the more unobtrusive for everyday use, the better. Preferably something employed only during rough weather that does not impede use on other days, or collect crud. Photos and/or specific product names would be very helpful!

Refrig lids are always a pain but if you are going offshore, you really need to add hinges and latches. They not only keep the lid from flying but restrain what is in the box.

Maybe you should leave the reefer at home and just rely on good old cigarettes and boos when at sea. ;-)

This message string is not in reference to Jimmy Buffet type refers. It is about refrigerator/ freezer hatches.

I had a problem with drawers that kept flying open at sea and sovled it by putting a couple of pad eyes near the drawers so I could run bungee cords over them while at sea. I could pull the bungee to the side to get access but otherwise it held the drawers closed. A couple of bungee cords running across the hatches might do the trick for you and would be easier to install than hinges.

If your drawers fly open on shore here, you''ll get arrested. As for the eyes, that depends on who''s look''n. I keep mine up with a piece of twine. Sorry, I just couldn''t resist!!!!

a couple of stainless flat strap eyes screwed to the top on ether side of the lid I guess you are talking about a flush lid and a fiberglass sail batten of the right length. Just slid the batten it in one eye and bend it in the middle and slip it in the other end and you have it. You can use the batten to spank the crew if they like that sort of thing and it is handy to get at as most of them will be close to where the food is.
