Running Rigging

We recently bought a C&C 36' 34 plus and would like to move the main sheet traveler from above the hatch/companionway to just in front of the helm. Does anyone have information on doing this?

I sympathize with your desires... not a fan of mid-boom out-of-cockpit mainsheets myself.

This is a fairly major job - complicated by the rather wide cockpit IIRC on your boat. If the floor is wide enough for a decent traveler than that might be one way to go. More common is for the traveler to bridge the gap between the cockpit seats. You'd have to stiffen the traveler between the seats, but the bigger thing here is whether there's an appropriate non-opening area of the seats to bolt the traveller through.

Sorry about the link, I wasn't able to copy the image. So from this picture is looks like you have some fixed seat area behind the stbd cockpit locker opening that would be appropriate to what you want. The other side has no locker, right?

Whether or not you can reuse your existing traveler will depend on its curvature, if any, and its length. It would also be a good idea to back up the bolts with a fairly heavy backing plate where you can.

Moving the mainsheet further aft is simpler than moving it forward, as moving it aft reduces the loads on the mainsheet and the boom. You will probably need a different traveler, if you have to span the cockpit.

The photo faster was talking about is this:

You'd need to have some fairly hefty backing plates for the traveler...and I don't know if the cockpit seats are strong enough to handle the loads without modification.

Our traveler is set up like the one in the picture above, and it works well. One caveat is that you'll want some sort of rail to keep the mainsheet from wrapping around the binnacle (especially if you have gps screens for it to catch on, like the one in the photo). In a jybe, the ss rail in the photo looks like it will reach out and grab the loose part of the mainsheet and you'll be doing a chinese firedrill to keep from losing expensive stuff and steer at the same time.

main sheet travler

Thank you Faster, Sailingdog and Paulk. the picture you give me gives me the assurance this has been done. The original track is too short but at least gives me an idea of what size it needs to be. My thought is to back up the track with 1/4" stainless plate. I also thought I might need to support the center of the track by putting a 8" spacer bolted thru the floor of the cockpit.
To Paulk, I am thinking to move the point of contact to the boom forward to about 10 degrees off plum to help keep the sheet from fouling on the binnacle. is there anyway to get some picture of the inside of your cockpit locker? and maybe the celing of the quarter berth.
