I have been considering this as well. I plan on making a wood camera holder that will get pulled up the backstay using the boom topping lift. Once at the top, the holder needs to be designed to straddle the mast somehow so it stays somewhat steady.

Pulling it up a halyard on it's own will definitely not work.

Video tape? I remember that. Pretty much any digital camera will record video to an SD card these are much smaller and lighter, some have remote controls. You should be able to clamp it to the spreaders before you set out, or as was noted make something to run up the sail track or the foresail track (most roller reefings have twin tracks).
