MY New Boat is underway!

This is just to say thanks to you guys that have replied to my other post My new Boat. I got dropped off yesterday at about 12:30 to the boat. I put everything onboard ok. I had to remove the outboard on and clean the shaft and proppler it was coverd in barnacales. I have some pics I will dl later. I am sort of pressed for time atm. Well I got underway at about 1:00 pm and by 1:30 I was in long island sound heading south. I just wanted to get out there put the sails up and she what she could do and man what a time I had. I pulled into oyster bay at about 5:00. I found out that just to tie up at the marina is like 7.00 bucks a foot and 1.50 to put out on a ball. What? thats crazy. Anyway I puttered over to oyster bay cove and set the anchor. Day one is good. The weather yesterday was awsome 10-15 out of the n, nw them. was around 60. So I am in town right now getting a few things and heading back out hopefully around 11:00 not sure yet where I will anchor tonight but I have to get back to boat soon. I told the guy I just had to go to the bank for an hour and would be right back hehehe There are a few issues I am going to have to get fixed very soon though some kind small little line that runs up the main sail along the Leech. Its a small line thats getting frayed.

Dan, okay, that's all good so far.

Do yourself a favor and stay put when the forecast is unfavorable. You may have to be patient, but there will be plenty of decent weather windows. Don't succumb to "get-there-itis".

Keep us posted and sail safe.

My new boat! Will do!

I will only sail in good conditions. My problem now is getting some good charts and or info. on places to tie up or set anchor for the night if the weather is bad. I really need a book with maps in it. I am at the library right now in oyster bay hoping to be able to make some copies of charts ect.... thanks Dan

Dan,

Good charts are well worth their price. So is a little hand-held gps (as was suggested by others in the other thread).

Failing those, if you have access to a color printer, this might be a secondary resource:

BookletChart™ (Experimental)

Welcome to the wonderful world of boating. A mooring ball for under 50 bucks/night is not such a bad deal in these parts. Luckily for you the season is largely done for many facilities so you may be able to tie up at a few places for no charge. The norm is usually to have to pay ridiculous rates. That is why I posted a few tips for places to stay in NYC on your other thread.
There is a yacht club that recently closed in Manhasset Harbor called the Knickerbocker Yacht Club where you might be able to tie up for free but I think that City Island is a better staging area for getting down the East River.
The booklet chart for LI Sound that JohnRPollard posted a link to will do in a pinch. Just don't let the pages get wet.
Guess I am not going to be able to meet up with you on the Sound as I have a dentist appointment on Tuesday.
Fair winds.

When you get to Middle Chesapeake stop in the Rhode river. You can drop anchor for free and I could give you lift into town for supplies.

You are really going to needs some charts and current tables before you make the trip through Hell Gate and the East River.
