Don't know who the 3 drunk sailors are, but that bar looks like Mike's on the South River. Man, do I have a some stories from that place (back in the 70's). Congrats Dan. I hope to be sailing up there next year.

Garfin,

Welcome to our little slice of the Empire here on the Chesapeake. After you sail here in the spring and see how many great places to explore....who knows you may stay put for a while.

Dave

Ramminjammin just checked your Trimaran (wed. 1:00 pm.) and it is doing great. We had rain the past 3 days and your boat is still dry. Garriffin is doing great we just pulled in a 37" Rock today, thats a record for Sea Chase (my boat).

CalebD will become famous soon enough
That is one pretty big Rockfish (er, Striped Bass) at 37". I guess they get a little bigger then that if they are lucky but not too much more then 4 - 5'.
Sounds like food for a week.
The middle photo (above) reminds me of Harness Creek but is probably just the South River shore or the Rhode River by Camp Letts.
Enjoy your home for the winter.

I would be guessing of course but either out by the duck blind at the entrance to the Rhode River or back up by the Sand Island that disappears at high tide. Beautiful spots and stripes on that fish either way.
Were you using bait or lures?
Really curious because I hope to get down there again to my friends 32' sailboat for an overnight next spring out of the Blue Water marina. I guess you know the owners father's boat 'Rocking Chair' that is a classic Chessy work/play boat? The owner's boat 'Traveler' is no slouch either but is their crab/work boat.
My best to you, lapworth, and Dan.

Calebd dinner was caught at green "1" and the 37" was caught at Bloody Point. The Bay seems very healthy this year and it seems like there are fish everywhere. I was using 8 to 12 oz. weights on Tandum Parachutes. The big boys like too stay down deep. If you come down let us know April is Trophy season.

Its all about the first mate!

In order to catch a good 36” Rock Bass you need a good first mate to talk you into going fishing in the rain after you can’t work. Then you also have to have a bit of luck. I wish I could get my wifi to work. I am using the library’s computer atm. thinking of going out for a sail tomorrow if anyone wants to just go screw around with sheet to tiller steering
And yeah I use to work up North in the winter time on the water. My first winter job on the water I got paid 100 bucks a day to keep ice off the boat. That worked into a 1/3 share back in 1997. So cold? As long as the water doesn’t freeze solid I should be good to go

Garrfin,

Congrats to you for making it - and without the Handheld VHF and GPS as I recommended in one of your other threads. Still, because you seem to do a lot of single handing, I hope that you somehow find a decent chart plotter to help keep you out of trouble.

Remember those guys that directed you when approached the Naval Munitions Pier in NJ? I am glad that they were helpful. However, the next time that a sailboat stumbles into their piece of the ocean, because of your foray, they are less likely to be as pleasant to the next guy. From their perspective, it will get tiresome after a while, and when these things get reported to the higher ups, they will need to show that they are responding to a nuisance.

That said, you are living the dream!

From now on I will have charts before leaving out!

In retrospect I should have had all the charts from LI to NC before I even took off from Huntington Bay. I now have the charts that I needed on the trip down. Funny how that worked out. Getting charts for an area that I have already gone through doesn’t make sense but I have them for the future. I am still not 100% sold on the idea that everyone must have a GPS. With good charts, a good compass, binoculars’, and a watch I can go anywhere without causing anyone any difficulties nor running the risk of life or damaging boats. One thing I noticed while fishing the other day and using lapworths gps is that I would start looking at it and almost forget that I was holding the tiller. Maybe that’s just me but I bet some people get caught up using the gps and forget what they are doing. I have been on some boats in the worst of weather and the rain so hard that the radar was worthless. In those times the only thing I would use was the GPS and compass. Without it during those times I don’t know what would have happened. So yeah GPS is not a bad thing it’s just I don’t see the need to have one. That being said I might get handheld gps for a back up in the future. Thanks to lapworth for the Chesapeake Bay chart book. Dan
