I have an older CanoScan and I really like it. When I do research at the library, I take it with me and scan stuff rather than copy it. It is faster and cheaper than using a copier at the library. When I get home, I can print out anything I want.

Difference between a power boater and a sailor out on the water: A power boater is going some place special, a sailor is already there.

That is a really good idea, I never thought of it.

A lot of the lower end scanners are USB-powered... and work fairly well for the limited needs you might have on a boat

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

You could also try using a digital camera... just take a pic of the doc, crop it on your notebook and then print it.

I hate inkjets, because the ink dries out whether you use it or not. If you seal it that probably helps. Too bad a laser printer would draw too much power onboard.

I thought about this, and I don't think the power requirements are the real problem for a laser printer, it is the size of most laser printers that would be the problem. Yes, laser printers use a lot of power just sitting there, but why does it have to sit there drawing power all the time, how often do we print on the boat ? Just reach over, turn the printer on when you need it, then turn it off when you are done.
