Smile Performance of the Mason surprem anchor

Hi everyone

Have purchase a 45lb mason surprem for a 36'cat 9 tns.. and upgraded the anchor winch as well , all chain rode in 8mm (100mts) 300'. As I plan to cruise australia to philippines over the next 100 years or so.

I picked this anchoe because its spose to be one of the best at setting and for holding power in most conditions.

I am looking for feed back from people who have this anchor and what they think of it.

thanks in advance and fair winds to all

Peter

We love ours. I've used a danforth, bruce and cqr and now the manson supreme. If I could only have one of those anchors on board, it would be the manson supreme. It has set faster and more firmly than our previous anchors, although it is larger than our previous anchors so we're comparing apples to oranges. We're using the same sized anchor as yours on a 41' boat that weighs in around 11 to 12 tons.

Not The Spelling Police But....

Is it Mason like a jar or Manson as in Charles? As if I need yet another brand to keep straight!

Yes, as in 'Charles'. Difference being the anchor 'Manson' gets let out more that the Charles variety...hopefully, never will.

All the writing on the wall (& posts) says what Mr ERPS says.

I am happy with our setup. [oversized manson plough = long shank cqr] and lots of rode. Actually, when I bought the boat it had a 45 and a 25lb plough. 18tonne needs more so I bought a 60lb.

Went for a cruise[ 600nm], brought boat into marina. Admiral stated in slightly sarcastic fashion {as every married bloke understands} "Why did we buy ANOTHER 60lb anchor?

Whilst the boat was left unattended in a marina, someone took off the 45lb, and replaced it with a comparible 60lb anchor. Now we have 2 identical manson ploughs. I cant work it out - dont need to.

Oz east coast will show you mud to sand to coral to seagrass. Supreme is SUPPOSED to handle it all, but the CQR had that claim to fame a few decades ago. Your technique will be more important than whether you have a cqr, bruce or supreme.

Good luck, keep us posted as to you plans.Where are you now?

I am jealous, been 15 years since I visited Airlie, between the sailing, the diving and Magnums it just does not get much better.
