There seams to be more of the criminal element around the waterfront these days. It used to be just the cost of boating that was murderous .

This is a sad situation. Yet people ask why I keep a pistol aboard.

Nothing a 12ga flare gun can't take care of. I know, I know, too much fire, but pointing it at someone would have the same effect, unless you're just looking for an excuse to kill someone.

We had a drunken crab fisherman board us a couple of months ago in the Pamlico Sound. I'm actually glad I didn't have a gun. He turned out to be harmless, but if I'd have shot him no telling what assorted trouble we'd have encountered with the next of kin. It was his home turf.

I don't think a flare gun is going to frighten most people who commit crimes. Plenty of criminals out there have been shot multiple times with real guns, and I doubt they will think much of you pointing a flare gun at them.

... but I suspect they'd soon feel different if you fired it!

A little more on topic, we had a "marina murder" on sleepy Hornby Island - a local liveaboard found dead in the harbour at Ford Cove.

I think police are looking for a stalker...

So far so good at our marina...though I'm always a little jumpy after dark. There was this crazy dude named "Sambuca" at one of the other sites that was doing the stalker thing. Had his English been better, I might have been more frightened.

In any case, I printed up a mask of CD's face and always wear that around our marina after dark. He's the nicest guy in the world. Who's gonna jump him, right? But now EVERYONE asks me how to barbeque stuff. Jeez.

Why, because a bright flare bounces off of them, lands on the deck, and starts melting its way through the fiberglass on its way to the ocean below ?

I don't know what to make of this. We are members of Mystic Seaport. We have docked at the Seaport marina. After hours you are free to roam the place. I never felt unsafe there. There has to be more to this story.

I had the same reaction as you, Bubb. I felt very secure there and the thought of an armed robbery was far from my mind.
