Winter Solstice Dec 21 2009 12:47 PM EST...

Tomorrow. Even though the winter is really just starting up here,
the additional daylight is welcome. I wonder how the Australians
feel, it is the beginning of summer for them. That is so hard to
relate to , with very cold temperatures, and snow all over.

CalebD will become famous soon enough
I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March several years ago which was the end of their summer (September is the equivalent up here). It was lovely and warm and there was even a very rare southern hemisphere hurricane that brushed the coast of Brazil.
It is not so weird as the seasons are offset by 6 months between the northern and southern hemispheres. If you want summer in winter just go south, waay south.
Yes, the Solstice is tomorrow and officially marks the beginning of winter up here and the beginning of summer down under.

My favorite day of winter is December 21st. Sure I like the big holidays like Christmas and New Years and my birthday in early February because those all are special days. But December 21st is different and here in the Northern Hemisphere that means the shortest day of the year ;-( BUT is also means that the days will slowly start getting longer and sailing season is making its way to my Chesapeake Bay! So, as you rush out the door for that special holiday gift for the admiral, smile cause sailing is coming soon, well, it is coming.
