Santa Barbara gear

I'm packing for a sailing trip to Santa Barbara the 9th. We are going overnite to Catalia Island.
How much foul weather gear should I bring. I have a regular light weight lined wind breaker with hood.

They are trying to get me to pack my full foul weather kit. Heavy jacket and bib pants. Those two items fill up a whole back pack just by themselves.

Do I need them? I rather not take the room.

If you get some northern weather. It could be cold, and wet. I would pack on the safe side.......i2f

I'm sitting in Catalina Harbor/Two Harbors this weekend and it was in the mid 70's today. Of course when the sun went down I had to switch out of shorts but it is great over here as long as the weather window is good. I always suggest Cat Harbor this time of the year though. The weather is usually predictable, but we have been caught off a couple of times. Cat Harbor gives great protection if that happens.

Just a follow up now that I'm back to shore. The trip is an easy downhill run as long as the weather window is good. There can be some hefty winds around the northern most Channel Islands, so keep an eye on the weather report. Right now, the weather report looks good, but winds can change up on that end. Usually, weather is predictable, but it can change. I usually keep some foulies on the boat, but nothing heavy.

I really like Catalina (Cat) Harbor on the back side of the island. We were supposed to have great weather for out four days over this last weekend. We had one night were the winds picked up as a Santa Ana Wind blew through. But we were tucked in to Cat Harbor, and I slept through most of it.

Going back is a slog uphill. But at least there are a couple of harbors to pull in and Santa Cruz Island as well.

You will likely get wet but it won't be all that cold. A polyester fleece sweater/jacket (no cotton)and water proof shell and bibs should be the most you will need.

The wind blows pretty hard through the channel at times (actually most of the time) but the temps will be in the mid 60's to mid 70's in the day and at the lowest in the mid to upper 40's at night. Your biggest enemy will likely be wind chill and spray.

High was 75 yesterday but after noon with some clouds and 15 knots of windchill I get cold. Right now we got a high over the great basin and a weak high to the south southwest which means dry air and Santa Ana winds (off shore, no fetch, no chop, great sailing). When either weakens or moves we'll be back to VERY heavy dew just before sunset, if you forget and sit down without foulies you are wet the rest of the night. Coldest I've ever seen Avalon is 38, 40's more common. I'm thin blooded and live here but 45 at night means multiple layers under foulies (absolute windproof) and gloves. I've even been known to wear a gore-tex down parka when no one can see me, but's it's your call.
