Yesterday we pulled in green cove springs, south of Jacksonville FL, We started off from Hilton head Thursday evening. At midnight on New Years Eve we 30 miles off the coast of Georgia under a full moon making 7 and 1/2 knots. Later on we were in a near gale surfing down the swells. Night time temps in the upper 30's wind chill in the 20's. Great saling! Easties Rock!!!! More to follow when I get to my back to my computer.
Woohoo Bubb! I knew you guys would pull down a big one. I look forward to your write up!

Sara! Sup? We've got the no wind blues too. So I'm there with ya sista.

jd - just throw up your main in the slip and ease back and forth on your spring lines. That counts. Manhattan marina? Nice.

Horizon - welcome to SN dude. You'll like the place.

JimH - I'd say that's stay home weather, especially on Biscay from what I've read about it.

SJ - secret weapon? C'mon man spill the beans to at least your SN crew.

Currently without sailboat or sailboat friends. It may be a long time before my first 2010 sail.

Okay, if you say so.

BTW, this happened on New Year's Eve on the North Kent coast:

NOT a good bfs for the last day of 2009 for a 4 week-old J133.

Oh man, Jim, that's a sad sight. Don't those draw almost 3 meters? Did they just find an odd rise, or were they in a shallow area? I have to say, the J's keels are not getting a good name in the world. I know this is different than one snapping off under sail - but it makes one wonder.

And, remember, it's only BFS when you get home safe.

It was 25 below zero hear yesterday morning. We are planning to Charter and board a Cat in Key West headed to the Dry Tortuga's on Feb. 26 with 3 other couples.

Any advice on the Dry Tortuga's appreciated.

We left at noon. It was in the twenties for most of it, with 1-3 foot seas. I took it pretty easy on my crew, and didn't push the boat at all. Single reef in the main and a roller-reefed jib for the beam reach out of Elliott Bay.

Furled the jib for the downwind run to Edmonds. The Admiral did NOT like how the boat handled when it surfed a bit... The boat is a handful in those kind of conditions.

We ran at 6.5 knots most of the time, with short surfs up to 8.

In hindsight, I should have taken a second reef in the main, and put a bit of jib out on the whisker pole. I think the boat would have balanced better.

Then again, what I should have done is had the Admiral and Hope take the bus back, and reached back with Mark. That would have been a hoot. The boy has an iron stomach.

Anyway, thanks for the call and weather report, Marty. It was good to know what we were going to see.

If you look closely you can briefly see that Hylas 47 in the video we took on New Year's day - what an awesome way to start the year!
