Yanmar 38 HP Installation Advice

Good Morning, We have bought a new ( 10 years old but still in crate), 38 hp Yanmar 3jh 2 c e. With our new motor came a basic owners guide but our shipwright needs an installation manual. It will have measurements etc for positioning mounts and the like.

Is anyone able to help or provide advice. I have rang the local Yanmar agent but they are not open until Mon 4th Jan.

Thanks & Regards

Lucky

Yanmar instalation

Best install info I know of is here-

How to change a yacht engine

I wrote it for guys in your situation.

Also, if the engine has been sitting for ten years in the crate then be sure to use the starter to turn the engine over while holding the stop till you have built oil presure. The engine will be dry in side and this will help.

Good luck

Scott

I'm not sure I would have someone who needs an installation manual for a marine diesel install one in my boat. Or to better put it, someone capable of properly installing an engine would know where to locate any information they were in need of to do so.

Fitting New yanmar 38hp

Hi Folks, Thanks for your very prompt & helpful advice, it is useful already.

We are located in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

Our Shipwright has been doing this task for 40 years or so. The new motor has only the standard Owner type manual, in which it advises "should installation information be required please see your Yanmar Dealer for an "Installation Manual". We have complete confidence in our ship right; the 42 hp 4 -cylinder Mercedes that we took out, is about 130 % the size of the three cylinder Yanmar 38 hp. The shipwright is seeking accurate engineering drawings with measurements to assist placement of mounts & alignment etc. There is a lot of information available on the net but I haven't found this exact model yet.

Thanks & Regards

Phil

Scott,

Thank you for the detailed writeup! I agree w/ you that replace is better than rebuild.

Two nits - there were a couple of pictures that didn't load for me (maybe because I'm in the US, maybe b/c I use Chrome as my browser). Also a lot of the pix had captions, but some (some important ones!) did not.

RE: Yanmar Installation Manual - Yanmar - Sailboat engines

RE: initial cranking -Because this engine has been sitting for 10 years, I would add a teaspoon of 2 stroke oil to each cylinder through the injector port. With the injectors out, raw water and fuel shut off, I would turn it over a couple of times to coat the cylinders with oil. Then I would replace the injectors, and proceed with the installation.

I'll look at it again today and try to clean up the installation page later today. Someone mentioned yanmar.com, you can also try yanmarhelp.com and for manuals try burningzone, you'll have to do a search as I don't have the full site, but they have free downloads. I don't recall the mount to crank specs being in the installation manual. That has things more like pto mount specs, and how to install, but if your looking for the measurements for building rails I think you will find them in the specification sheets. The installation manual is for all engines and more general. At least for the version I have seen anyway.

Okay, I'll look at cleaning up the install page later today.

Thanks
Scott
