Boat for offshore

Is it a good idea to buy a fixer offshore boat for cheap (if possible) ie Alberg 30 and fix it up in my yard. I have a small workshop and a fairly good idea of boat repairs. I sail a cc29 and am gaining lots of experience but I don't think I want to take this boat offshore. I do think it could handle it with prep work. I want an Atlantic crossing and that is about it. Cruise Europe a bit then sail back to Canada.

I have seen some good offshore boats for resonable prices. I am not ging offshore for 5 years (retirement)

Thanks
Len

Len only you can decide if it is a good idea or not. If you have the time and talent you could certainly fix up and test out an older boat.

What boat to buy, is really the big question that seems to get asked about every day on here. I would suggest looking at some of Jeff H's old posts, I know he commented not too long ago on the Allberg 30 in particular and suggested that it's hull design had some issues with sea motion.

Good luck and do you sail out of Bayfield ?

You end up with this in your yard BUT the real issues is much of the fix-up work is held up by the weather if you dont have a pole barn or something better than tarps :)

You will kind of have to workout a budget and then double it and see if you could in fact find a boat in good shape for that figure

I am not going futher than LIS daysailing so i dont need as perfect a boat

I've done what you propose: buy a fixer-upper offshore boat for cheap (initial purchase) and re-fit it (not insignificant total cost). My project is documented starting here: GREYHAWK: Purchase
