RIVIERA BEACH, FL. -- At 11 a.m. Wednesday the Coast Guard received a distress call from a boater anchored in the Intracoastal Waterway just south of the Blue Heron Bridge.

The caller and another man on the sailboat had been overcome by carbon monoxide.

The Coast Guard responded and towed the boat into its base in Riviera Beach.

Both boaters were transported to St Mary's Medical Center.

One of the men died at the hospital and the other is being treated for exposure to carbon monoxide.

The Riviera Beach Police are checking the sail boater's generator to determine if it was working properly.

A follow up local news story reported that the boat owner was using a portable generator set up inside the boat to power an electric heater.

"It is not so much for its beauty that the sea makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from the waves, that so wonderfully renews a weary spirit."

It's sad, yes, but possibly worthy of a Darwin Award?

In Washington state they hand out little CO warning stickers with your registration and suggest that they display it clearly in the boat. I wonder if this is the case in CA?

It's a shame that the man died, we all make dumb mistakes, I have just been lucky enough that none of them have killed me!
