Beat the Taxes

We are planning to leave our boat North of Georgia for the summer 2010 (hauled).June - Sept. Does anyone know what state would be best so that we don't get hit with taxes?

What kind taxes would you be incurring? Property taxes?

Smile Taxes

We understand that if your boat is in a state for a certain amount of months,or at a certain date, the owner could be charged either a state tax or excise tax.

You might face a sales/use tax, which is a one-time tax, and generally quirte significant, or an excise tax, which is an annual tax, and generally small. Your exposure to a sales/use tax depends...have you paid a sales/use tax somwhere already, if yes you may be OK, but you need to review the rule sof the target state for non-resident owners. You will owe the excise tax based on how quickly or competently the state in question finds and bills transient boats.

If the boat is on a trailer..simply take it to one of the many storage lots in the state of your choice.Pay the monthly storage fee and the taxes be dammed.

In California we get a property tax bill every year for owning a boat. Whoever owns the boat on 1/1 gets to pay the whole bill.

It seems like property tax varies by state/county so you'll need to do some homework.

If you document your vessel (federally) you may be able to avoid it all together. But that's not free.

Nope. Registered with the DMV or documented with the CG, the tax bill still comes from the Tax Assessor's office of the county in which the boat is kept.

maryland would be a pretty safe bet that you would not get hit with taxes. yes they do have the law that if its here 181 days you need to register it here. that would mean at least the sticker fees of 24 bucks or something like that. if you can prove that you paid at least 5 % on the boat in another state they cant get taxes out of you. as we dont have yearly taxes on boats

in maryland there are plenty of smaller safe marinas that you could pull it and store it with no stickers, and probably never hear a word. unless you did not pay the bill

Possibly Delaware if I remember correctly, but then again, my memory might not be what it once was.

I know my memory isn't what it once was, or at least I think it isn't??! Anyway, I've heard that Delaware doesn't have those kind of taxes too.
