lightning

I am looking at a Lightning {tga12710375} It should be a 1975. All glass and a green hull and yellow topside? Yes it is an Allen
What can anyone tell me as what to look for as a weakness etc
Thanks Chris

There is a good article on the Lightning Class website about this. Some of the older Allens have issues with cored decks and centerboard trunks. If the boat has been out of the weather (covered or garaged all of its life those should be minimal.

Send me a PM is you wish and I'll be happy to help.

I wanted to post a link to the article but the class site is down right now-

http://www.lightningclass.org/ - look under "Resources"

The fiberglass flotation tanks have also been a problem area with the older Allens

Nope was left in the water all summer and is now on trailer and uncovered under the pine trees. Boat has green hull and yellow topsides that look original
Thanks Chris

Should be hull # 12710 made in March 1975.

You can tell a lot by tapping and pushing on the deck and hull to ID core damage. If you find a lot of soft spots and gelcoat cracks on the deck - I'd look for another. There are several for sale in our area right now.
