Abby's choice of boats wasn't all that great.
Jessica & Laura's choice of boats appears to be much better

I'd point out that Abby had little to do with picking her boat, and that may have been a big part of why she failed. She didn't know the boat, know the equipment on it and didn't have the experience sailing it that was required for her goals to be achieved. Jessica picked her boat, was in charge of fitting it out—including ripping out a perfectly good diesel engine to put in the one she wanted to have aboard—and had the time in on it.

Laura seems to be closer to Jessica than Abby in terms of where she is with her boat—how well she knows it and how seakindly a design it is. It isn't as big as Abby's nor as traditional a design as Jessica's.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
