Ozzies, did anyone notice this hurricane screw up?

Queensland AU,
Hurricane Hamish.

Scroll down to the text and pics of your pristine beaches covered with shipping disaster leakage. 2009 Nightmare- MV Pacific Advenurer

This may not top the dumping of nuclear waste at the Farellon Islands off of San Francisco 40 or so years ago (on purpose) but it is still a recent contender for "Man's inhumanity to nature" awards from last year.

Was this in the press in OZ? I think I remember the 'hurricane' (why wouldn't you call it a 'cyclone'?) but I don't recall much coverage of the chemical and fuel spill. Then again I am in the US of A where this is considered the cost of doing business and the insurers could breath a sigh of relief that it was a 'named' storm (therefore limited or no payout of liability).

Yours to consider or discard.
Enjoy, or not.

Yes it was in the press. It happened where we sail and have 4wd/camped on the island. It is a beautiful part of the world. They did locate the missing containers pretty quickly and it was great to see that they sank [from a cruisers perspective]

My memory of the inquest was that the skipper ws approached to slow down - but deadlines and care factor prevailed.

It took a long time to clean up and still some residue is apparent. It actually messed up a lot of water - boats in marinas with blacked topsides etc. Killed a lot in fragile ecosystems in the wetlands just south.

We do call them cyclones - hurricanes spin the wrong way.

St Ana,
That's just cause you're south of the equator.
When I was in the Pacific. The hurricane-like storms were referred to as typhoons - but this was still north of the equator. Do you call them typhoons in your neck of the woods?

As long as it disappears, I dont care. You need to get out more, sail across an ocean or 2, see how the toilet water spins on the equator... That is not a question high on the priority list, and a number of events have to occur in sequence for the question to be answered. (Like tandoori, the night before)
Good luck with it.
Oh very pleased to make your aquaintance - cant be too many saints about.

Hiya Bloodhunter. I agree, same rotten nasty things to avoid anywhere.

I've been very lucky - only skipped the edges whilst at sea.

Living in a farmhouse 5miles inland when a bad one came over, eye and all. Makes one nervous when a cyclone warning is on.
