It might be worth dropping the board completely and checking out the pivot pin while you have the boat out of the water.
Otherwise, having the boat in the slings is probably the best approach... you might try seeing if they can leave the boat in the slings overnight... hauling in the afternoon and then you have the afternoon and evening to sand and paint the centerboard. Don't forget to sand and paint inside the centerboard trunk.
