I don't know anything about these two places, but a quick search gave me these that both offer classes in the Portland area. No obligations, no membership (at least it appears so), just classes. Taking classes often will get you further along to understanding how to sail than race crewing, where you tend to learn your specific job. Don't get me wrong--crewing is good too! Just saying if you want take classes, it looks like they're available.

They may be others as well. Again, I'm not familiar with these specific places, but I know a number of people who have benefited from ASA classes, which are available all over.
