I need information about my new Oceanis 40

Dear all,

I ordered my new Oceanis 40 which will be delivered in May . I decided not to order the Easy Docking Pack and I am trying to choose a good anchor. I am thinking on a 20 kg Delta by Lewmar. The boat comes with a 1000 W Electric windlass. I would like to know from the experts in this site, what diameter of chain and rope I should get. I will have many doubts as my sailing experience is minimum and I would like to get in contact in Oceanis owners that do not mind to give advice.

Kind Regards, Luis

Luis,
I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice, but it seems like these are commissioning issues that you're already paying your beneteau dealer to help you decide and install. Like other's, I have my own thoughts on what type of anchor I'd do for a boat like yours (rocna), but it's also dependent on what type of bottom and where you're planning to sail and anchor. Have fun with the new boat!

Bigger than you need is the best size.

The chain size will be determined by the size of the gypsy on the windlass. Ask you dealer.

Check with your dealer for the exact specs but for a reference our B43 came with a 35lb Delta, 9/16 rode and 3/8 chain. Sorry I don't know the metric equivilents. Congratualtions, you'll love the boat.

IMHO, a 20 KG Delta is a bit on the small side for a boat the size of yours. I think you'd be better off with a 20 KG Rocna or 45 lb. Manson Supreme. These will have significantly more holding power and set better than a Delta, and are more appropriate a size for your boat.

You will probably want at least 5/16" G43 HT chain with 5/8" nylon rode at a minimum, though this is probably a bit light for a boat as large as yours. However, the windlass gypsy is the most important determinant of what you can use for an anchor rode, so you should check that first. BTW, this is one of the most common rode specifications for smaller boats...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Hello,

Thank you for all the answers. After posting this question I discover that the standard Easy Docking Pack supplied by Beneteau includes a 16KG Brittany anchor, 20 meters of 10mm chain and 30 meters of 18mm rode. I will probably choose, at least, a 20KG anchor.

Kind Regards, Luis

Luis--

With all due respect, the 16Kg Brittany anchor seems all but worrthless. Some friends of ours got one with their new boat and it dragged every time they tried to use it on a trip down the west coast of Florida. They couldn't give it away and so tossed it in a dumpster in Ft. Myers, and replaced it with the 25Kg Rockna. I suggest that or, as previously reccomended, at least the 45# Manson. Further, !0 meters of chain also seems shy to me. I would not go with less than 30 meters of chain and 30-50 meters of line. That coupled with duel 6 meter--10mm--nylon snubbers attached to a chain hook will give you good ground tackle for most all conditions.

FWIW... Good luck with the new boat!

I cant believe that is what they're giving you as part of the anchoring packages. Wow.

Our B343 came with a Lewmar Claw...its a low-end anchor, but I'd take a claw over the Brittany any day of the week. That anchor is basically a lunch hook at best...and way undersized.

Luis, I just wanted to congratulate you. "... my new Oceanis 40", it just kind of hangs there in the air doesn't it, like "I just won the lottery ..." (dramatic pause). Good for you.
