In a lot of areas, you're going to be running into depth issues. I did the Norfolk to Albermarle section in December in a boat that draws 2' or so, and we still hit bottom.

Local knowledge will be invaluable. Skipper Bob's guides will be very helpful.

Be aware that the storms this winter have probably caused more shoaling than was previously there.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Went east coast icw 2 yrs ago with a 5.5 & had water issues. Most state 8 ft but some areas less.Must stay in channel which is not always between markers.I would not do it again. If you go as far as Miami you will love the many bridges.marc

Marc makes a good point. What is your air draft... how tall is the stick on your boat?? There are quite a few bridges, and not all of them open.

I have recently down Charleston to Beaufort on paper and with a Navionics Gold card (5-1/2 ft draft), and Beaufort to Norfolk on paper and with a Navionics Platinum card (6 ft draft). We ran aground twice on the first boat but got ourselves off. We ran aground once on the second boat (mid-channel!) and needed a tow.

I suspect you could do it with some care and conservatism, a lot of attention, and a good towing policy.

Air draft is an issue. 65' isn't always 65'.

re ICW

My stick is right around 55', accordind to my 1977 brochure. I think this spring when I re-install the boom and pull up the main I am going to hook a 100' tape to it ,and make my own calculations to the waterline. Tis boat has a steel fin keel, I looked into Mars keel reduction, Its a 4K job if I do it myself, its kinda like roofing, not mentally challenging, but a ballbuster, hard work.....Red
