Marathon to Bahamas, route?

Hey All,

This past weekend I moved my father's 38' FP catamaran down from Naples, FL to Marathon. Our ultimate goal is Nassau, via Bimini, within a few weeks.

I have a several part question regarding the route. I've done Biscayne Bay to Bimini, and it was a great trip. However, is sailing up to miami before turning for Bimini necessary?

I'd like to make for it directly out of marathon (skipping miami), and use the gulf stream to carry us rather than sail directly across aiming a little south of the island. I know it's not done as often, but I'm trying to figure why that is... something I'm missing?

Thanks,

Jeff

The only reason it's not done is the greater distance involved, requires an overnight trip. We've done it a time or two, can be gorgeous sailing in the right weather.

There is no need for you to go to Bimini, from Marathon, if your objective is to reach Nassau. You would be much better off entering the Banks at South Riding Rock. This would save you considerable distance and time. Water depths will not be an issue. You can clear Customs at Chub Cay, Andros, or wait until Nassau.

This route is described in most cruising guides (like Pavlidis) and should also be shown in an Explorer chart kit.

Good luck and fair winds!
