Oyster Sloop Hope

Some photos of HOPE, believed to be the last built oyster sloop on Long Island Sound.

What a lovely looking boat.

SB, have you read Mark Kurlansky's history of the New York oyster industry, "The Big Oyster" ? Great read.

I have read COD and THE LAST FISH TALE which are both very good.
I am reading THE BIG OYSTER right now.
He is a very good writer.
I have heard good things about SALT also.

Salt, highly recommended. It explains an awful lot about settlement and travel routes. As an example Route 66 follows (followed anyway) salt licks across the continent. Fascinating book.

I also loved his History of the Basques, which dovetails in with Salt and Cod. I have a great love of the Basque Country so it was especially interesting for me but the book is more than worthwhile for anyone who got a kick out of Salt and Cod.

1968 is a good read as well.

I've not read 'The Last Fish Tale' or 'Food of a Younger Land' but will do so this year.

Fabulous writer.

The economy is not so rosy nowadays, but if you read THE BIG OYSTER you will be mighty thankful you were not amongst the working class in NYC in the 19th century. Mark Kurlansky provides a fascinating look at history. And COD is another favorite. Two terrific books.

COD is the book that first introduced me to his work.
