Fractional to Full Rig?

I am replacing the mast on my Spirit 23 and thus have the opportunity to change the rig to a full from the current fractional. I am thinking of this so as to have better control over mast shape. Are there any disadvantages to this?

Yes there are lost of disadvantages to this. Your boat was probably designed as a fractional rig and going to a masthead rig would give you leehelm which is dangerous in high winds.

Beyond that with a fractional rig you generally have better control over mastbend, and pumping and lower compression loads than a masthead rig.

Beyond that you will need all new headsails cut to fit this new configuration and the foretriangle may have too high an aspect ratio to really work well.

By the time you''ve fixed all the problems Jeff H brings up, you will have found out it would have been cheaper to buy a different boat if you wanted a masthead rig. Certainly a lot less hassle.
