Lucky chap

This guy was somewhat lucky to get away with this. Seems like stupid decision after stupid decision to me, could have ended up a lot worse. I'm still not really sure how he managed to get pushed that far north (twice), did his boat not have a motor perhaps?

A cement boat? That seems like a stupid idea too me. Has the inventor of such a thing never heard the expression "to sink like a rock"?

Just sounds to me to have been ill prepared.
I try not to be too judgemental in these cases as it could very easily have been me.

I'm with Paul. Seems like a plethora of stupid decisions.

1) Buying a boat and immediately heading out on a voyage. Things were bound to break.
2) Heading down the west coast with apparently very little experience.
3) Heading out down the west coast without checking a weather forecast. You've got to be kidding!
4) Not preparing the boat and cabin for storm conditions.
5) After getting hammered by a storm which broke his companion's arm, heading out again, this time alone, without checking a weather forecast. Is there a death-wish here?
6) Inability to fix the broken rudder, jury rig a new rudder, or to steer without a rudder.
7) Abandoning a large boat for a dingy.
8) Abandoning ship without issuing a Mayday, or even trying to contact anyone.
9) Apparently abandoning the dingy on the beach without securing it.
10) Apparently abandoning whatever survival gear he had in the dingy.

Feel free to add things I've missed.

I'd second what Jim said... and making the assumption that you can cross 20 kilometers of terrain to a nearby port, which is complete wilderness that you have no idea about is pretty stupid too. The chances of being spotted under the cover of the trees in the PNW temperate rainforest is minimal. If he hadn't returned to the beach, he'd be dead.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I didn't realize they made boats out of that stuff. Seems like a crazy choice to me.
