Surveyor and Yard needed in Deltaville

A friend has just bought a boat and needs to hire a surveyor, and then assuming the sale goes through, a reputable and reasonably priced yard to do so me work before he brings her home.

The boat is a catamaran, so a surveyor with experience would be preferable.

Thanks,

Daniel,

I have friends with Geminis who have hauled out at the Stingray Point marina (The yard goes by a different name, but I think mainly for business/tax purposes), and at a marina on Jackson creek whose name I'm blanking on (edit - Deltaville Boat Yard).

I know Drew (pdqaltair) bought his boat at the marina on Jackson creek, so I'm sure he can give you the name. I think they hauled out his catamaran there too. He may be able to give you the name of a surveyer as well. Hopefully he'll be along soon.

I highly recommend Crown Marine Services [804-725-6555]. They have been there a long time providing quality repairs, construction of custom yachts and some of the best paint jobs I've seen anywhere.

PalmettoSailor will become famous soon enough
There are two surveyors in Deltaville that I'm familiar with. First is Donald McCann (Tranquil Waters T: (804) 435- 6942 who I used to survey my first boat. I think he did a pretty good job but might be a tad less hard assed than you might want.

The other I haven't used but I have the impression he's got quite a reputation for wrecking deals on boats. His name is Peter W. Schacht 804-824-4102 -O & R, 804-824-4102 -Mobile.

My thinking is you want to see McCann show up if your selling and Schatt to show up if you'e buying. To clarify, I understand Schatt always gives the worst case scenario for issues like blisters or elevated moister readings with no signs of decay. Issues that certainly affect the value of a boat but may or may not be worthy of causing you to walk away.

As for yards, I've used Schroeder Yacht Systems - Full Service Yacht Repair & Maintenance and Deltaville Boatyard – Full service ABYC yacht repair on the Chesapeake Bay. and find them equally capable of screwing up whatever you need done. Actually, I'll use Schroeders for whatever work remains to be done before we move north this spring.

Hope that Helps.

I just heard from Jim Brown [trimaran designer] that there is a new multihull boatyard right around the corner in Reedville. Check out Multihull boat builder and multihull haul and repair boat yard on the Chesapeake Bay Catamaran Builder and Builder of commercial vessels Jaynes Marine . I don't think that you will find more multihull experience anywhere else on the Bay.
