To some extent its relative, I am thinking about buying a boat (currently boatless). If the boat I decide to buy has roller furling then great but if it didn't that wouldn't be a deal breaker. It might turn out that given my very restrictive budget that I can get a better deal on a boat without it. If I do end up getting a boat and it doesn't have it and I could afford it I would go for it provided other issues were in line. I wouldn't sacrifice self-steering, a good galley or nav station/area, a good dingy, quality mainsail reefing, etc. I guess it is a matter of priorities, goals, and the condition of the boat in question. While I have not priced roller furling systems my guess is that in the size of boat I am looking at (27' - 35') a ballpark figure would be $1500 - $3000 (including having sails recut).

If the boat did have roller furling and it was in bad condition whether I would replace the system or change to hanks. But that is a question for another day

FWIW, I have sailed both with it without in some pretty bad conditions both near shore and offshore.

Sam
