Articles of the Week - Floating the Gold

One of the best resources on this forum, that seems to be unique to SN, are the great articles that have been submitted over the years. These things are a gold mine of information from seriously respected sailors like John Rousmaniere and many others. And they're FREE!

I've rummaged through many of them and have not been disappointed yet. And I see that there are always people reading them. The problem is, most of them are locked so you can't comment or quote.

So, how about we use this thread to float some of the best SN articles each week. Find a good one that suits the subject you're interested in (Seamanship, Gear & Maintenance, Navigation, Cruising, etc.) and dump a link to it in this thread. Then summarize why you think it's gold. Even riff on what may be out of date about the info - whatever.

Here's where you'll find them:

http://www.sailnet.com/forums/featured-articles/

Let's do this thing!

(PS - Mods if you guys can figure out a way to feature articles on a rotating basis on the home page of the forum or something - kill this thread and go for it. That would be sweet.)

Heh-heh. Only if no one's reading the articles.

This thread isn't for conversation anyway (per se), it's for linking to valuable info that's been buried over time. And everyone could use that...even the loudmouths.

The only other place I've seen the articles featured is on the Home page (which I rarely go to) - and those are just the most recent. Maybe the mods could move that feature into the forum? Who knows?

In the mean time I'll keep at it.

Installing deck hardware, by Don Casey

I tell myself I'm not scared to do this... so why have I been putting off a simple repair for a year?

A useful, down-to-earth article even if you're not planning on crossing oceans any time soon

Here's a good one that deals with the siren calls (and realities) of a cheap-ass boat:

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
