Internet on board at anchor

I have tried using my mobile (cell) phone as a modem and found this pathetically slow and expensive.

The following year I purchased a 3G modem and Sim (OK here in the U.K. but very expensive whilst cruising abroad)

I only want to open text emails nothing too big.

Please can you advise me?

You do not give your location and cruising area which would be useful.

Using a G Sky remote wifi modem I am getting a good connection at up to a mile and have found regular wifi [sometimes free] from Florida down to Antigua.

Mind you just come across the real Pirates of the Caribbean. Usually the rate is 30 to 40 US$ per month. ACT in Antigua are trying to charge $125.

If you are only interested in emails many of the large screen phones can retrieve and send emails and provide rudimentary internet access, I use a Blackberry, Its not easy to type on one but it is OK. The iphone is probably better suited to internet use. The pricing varies a lot among providers.

Chris—
If you're in relatively civilized waters, I would recommend using an amplified WiFi antenna. Read about it on my blog.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I use my iPhone with 3G connected to my laptop and it works great. I can have video conversations over Skype just fine with it amazingly enough. Definitely recommend it.

I plug the USB connector that comes with the phone (used for charging) into my laptop (which you would do to sync with iTunes) and setup the network to see it as a network connection. You have to make sure that your provider allows tethering. I had to call mine and request they turn it on for my account. I'm close to Vancouver, Canada.

In the US, AT&T hasn't gotten the tethering worked out yet AFAIK... so you're going to have to jailbreak the phone if you want to tether.
