First Sailboat

I am sure there has been hundreds of threads started by people like me looking to get into sailing. My main concern is the start-up costs involved outside of the purchase price of the boat. So far I am looking at about $1500 for a used mooring set-up, haul for boat to water, fresh bottom paint and a good outboard motor (I have a small budget so each boat I am looking at needs the outboard replaced).

My business is in the tank and has been for the last 14 months so this may not be the time for me to break into sailing. I do have a 29 foot Thompson Twin Screw I am trying to sell but it seems everyone is in the same "boat" as I am in financially so no offers as of yet.

Does anyone have any leads in Long Island for cheap used Moorings, paint, lines, equipment and perhaps a trailer or a fellow sailor to help me get her to the water?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys!!

There are several used marine equipment shops listed that would not be too far for you. Look at the thread on used and consignment marine stores.

Cheap used moorings are often a risky investment... since you're going to be relying on it to hold your boat safe. Renting a mooring for the season is not all that expensive and the mooring provider is responsible if the mooring fails.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thanks for the reply SailingDog.

If anyone has any left over bottom paint (any color) they want to sell please let me know. I am going to try to paste this project together one step and every dollar at a time. With my luck once is all said and done and I find a boat and piece her together with every last cent I have, my Thompson power boat will sell and I will have a bunch of money to put into her. Murphys Law is so me!!! lol

You may be able to find a used mushroom anchor at one of the yacht clubs on the north shore of LI where they use moorings. I'd start looking around now as it may take them some time to figure out which anchors are no longer in use. As SD mentioned some may not be in such great shape but if it is only the ring at the top of the stalk that is worn you can have a new horse shoe shackle welded on to it for reinforcing.
There must be at least 1 yacht club per harbor on the north shore where they use moorings from Mt. Sinai west to Manhasset Harbor. You will have to hunt to try and keep your costs down. Since you are still looking for a boat you could combine your anchor quest visits with looking at and for boats that appeal to you. Many yacht clubs have bulletin boards where members will post 'boat for sale' ads.
New mushroom anchors go for $1/lb. so used ones should be well less then that. Another consideration is sizing your mushroom anchor to the weight of your boat. Our boat weighs 7000# and we use a 250# mushroom in the Hudson to hold our boat.

Is this the Islander you were interested in? 21' Sailboat

Here's a 27' foot in your budget: Sail Boat 27' Luger w/ trailer

A Santana 21': W D Schock Santana 21

And here is one with an asking price a bit higher then your target: 27' Bristol Weekender

Best of luck.

Good looking out CalebD. Yes that's the Islander. I also have my eye on 2 Seafarer 24s. I also found a really nice Morgan 27 for a pretty nice deal at $3k but that's not happening without first selling my Thompson.
