How tall are the letters on the side of your boat?

Hi All...

Althought I bought my boat in September of 2008, I have yet to put her name on the sides of her stern. I was sitting here ordering the vinyl, but it occured to me I don't really know how tall the letters should be.

The boat is 30 feet. Any suggestions?

Thanks...

I would follow regulation which I think your documentation will say is 4". Larger is better but not required....I think!

I also believe you need hailing port. If it is not documented and just a name I think you can go with anything because the registration numbers will be official and I think they have to be a min of 3" but it is always best to check your paperwork first.

Oh the registration number is on the bow. This is just for the name. Are there regulations for the name? I don't think a name is required.

If your boat is state registered, you should check with the state for their requirements.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

IIRC the name on the stern is supposes to be minimum 4" supposidly in block style, so CG or equal can read it with binocs. Now with that said, I did use the ****** in solid for my boat, same with the city, state part. name is a bit bigger, about 5", city IIRC is 4"

On the side, you can do what ever you want! I'm about 30" long and 8" tall on my 30'r, will be down in a bit, I'll measure to verify.

That is the case in Canada. We have a name, I just made it up, a port too but it is clearly not a port. We have been borded a number of times and the numbers on the bow have been the only thing they were interested in.

Side of the boat is 10" H and 40" long. The stern is 8x30, with 2.5" city lettering.

Be careful, someone out there is wearing a plaid suit and kiwi green tie and you're asking for their opinion on good taste.

Snap a picture of the transom, print it out, pencil in the name (or photoshop it) and see what looks good TO YOU. Then measure what you did, versus the transom height, and figure out what size letters those would be. (Or, stick a ruler on the transom before you take the pic, to have a handy scale measurement.)

Wat he sed.

There are no hard and fast rules. What's the boat's name? A lot of the graphic identity can be built around that. Shape of transom, length of name, name of hailing port, etc...

It's my understanding that if the boat is documneted (in the US) w/ the CG, there are certain minimum sizes for name and hailing port. In WA, for state reg., they're only concerned with size and placement of registration numbers and tags. Can't remember BC exactly, but I do remember seeing both large and very small... others with no name at all.

Jarcher... checked out your blog, and you mentioned painting your prop.... Did you really?
