JUST HIT THE BRAKES! Brakes on a Boat Take a Jet Ski to Jet Stop | Autopia | Wired.com

I know this is not a new idea on jet skis, but I've been seeing TV commercials promoting it lately.

I've seen jet skis, other small boats just slow down or stop when my boat or other larger boats are in front of them. the operator's face often tells you he's confused as hell. It's like duh? They really don't know what to do when approaching a larger boat?

I guess the outset will be jet skis coming at you full bore, and hitting the brakes just to show you they can?

Nah, they'll be hitting you cause they don't know how to work the brakes properly...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Then you'll also have that guy that brakes right in front of you thinking that you can brake too!

From the article I've just read, those are not brakes but a means to ring up a backing bell. Ships can do that... but it takes them a couple of miles to come to a complete stop. And some of the work boats that I ran, you still needed a great distance in order to stop. Due to the minor detail that there is an eight second delay from going ahead to backing down. You have to wait for the shafts to stop.

I can't wait until this summer and having to deal with this on the lake I sail on. Lots of power boats, personal water craft and liquid courage. May stick to using vacation time to sail during the week......
