Sailed Last Night by Moonlight
Jane had a meeting after dinner, I went sailing. The wind was south, gentle. I got underway just before sunset. Out in the Sound I set sails and nav lights. The sunset left wispy orange clouds and a bright silver moon. Reached a few miles up to the Port Jeff "A" buoy, headed up to avoid the ferry. Came about, the wind now light, struck the staysail and tinkered with the jib. Did ok poling it out with the boathook. Gradually the wind increased and backed. Now we're sailing. All alone on the Sound, a gull crying as it flies by in the dark. Just have to look out for my nemesis: the unlit ball buoy off the entrance. I thought I was clear of it, then I saw it dimly ahead. Closing with the beach, I start the motor and furl sails.
This is why I sail.
