Sailed Last Night by Moonlight

Jane had a meeting after dinner, I went sailing. The wind was south, gentle. I got underway just before sunset. Out in the Sound I set sails and nav lights. The sunset left wispy orange clouds and a bright silver moon. Reached a few miles up to the Port Jeff "A" buoy, headed up to avoid the ferry. Came about, the wind now light, struck the staysail and tinkered with the jib. Did ok poling it out with the boathook. Gradually the wind increased and backed. Now we're sailing. All alone on the Sound, a gull crying as it flies by in the dark. Just have to look out for my nemesis: the unlit ball buoy off the entrance. I thought I was clear of it, then I saw it dimly ahead. Closing with the beach, I start the motor and furl sails.
This is why I sail.

John - Beautiful description. I must have just missed you. I went out yesterday late afternoon and had an amazing sail as the wind was around 10-15 out of the South East. It was such a nice evening. When we came in we decided to sail around the harbor for a bit and Christa and I went right by Wandering Star to see if you were on to say hello. You must have came out right when we went in.

Hopefully one of these days we will all be out there together. Also Wandering Star looks great this year!

Also was out sailing a few hours late afternoon into the evening .. the moon was out.. not often we get to sail a reach on the River here. Was near perfect! about 5 mph wind. no stress.. boat moving along nice.

Reading your accounts makes me smile.
Nick, I'm sure we'll catch up. I'm retiring next month and devoting myself to sailing (and fixing the boats, the car, the house. Oh yeah, cooking for Jane). Thanks for the compliment. When I look at her from the dinghy I love her. When I'm aboard I still love her, but I see that the bowsprit, bulwarks and hatch coamings all need paint.

where on the sound are you located?

I'm in Stamford, was planning on going out last night myself, but my girlfriend forgot warm clothes to go out on the boat, so we went for a walk and got ice cream instead... not quite the same, but enjoyable none the less.

Thinking about heading up to Port Jeff friday afternoon and saying the night.

Droptop - John, Barry and I all sail out of Mt. Sinai harbor, just east of Port Jeff. I may be in Port Jeff also a night or two this Memorial Day weekend. I spent two nights there last weekend for the first time this season and it was great. I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Barry,

I'm hoping to get out on the boat also this weekend. Originally we were planning on driving up to Maine but I think we're going to push it back and just go on the boat instead. I should have the dingy with me on Sat so I'll swing by your mooring if your around to say hello.
