Snipe Sailboats
We have two old snipe sailboats which are a huge pain and one of the masts is not good, fiberglass coming apart on another etc etc. I would like to piece together one good one out of both...haven't sailed in years but want to get back into it. I would like to buy something similar in size and sailing ability for one to two people...something easier to manipulate. Any ideas or suggestions?

There is a boat called an O'Day Daysailor which is about 17' long - perhaps a tad bigger then a Snipe. Very simple to rig and there were a bunch of them made. Oday Daysailer II sailboat for sale
Almost any newer small sailboat should be easier to deal with. I sailed a Snipe several times back in the day, thought it was a kind of fun boat.

I went from a snipe to a Harbor 20. I LOVE my Harbor 20. It is a fun day sailor and simplicity epitomized.

Re: Snipe Sailboats
Well, after spending many hours of loving hard work on a 1970 Lofland Snipe for my two daughters, the first day out I bent the mast beyond repair. Does anyone know where I can get a used Snipe mast to salvage my pride and so my kids will speak to me again?

Hey Rick -

Welcome to Sailnet! One small thing: It would probably be better to just start another thread, rather than bringing up an old one.

Back to the question. Don't have any leads on a Snipe mast, but, here is what you are looking at:

APS - Mast and Boom Fittings

That would be pretty stupid considering you might be able to get a (really) used boat for $200

You might also be able to McGyver some sort of repair, with an aluminum sleeve.

I think I would look for a used boat and salvage the part(s) you need.

Re: Snipe Sailboats
Sorry to hear about your bent mast misadventure.
The good news is that the Snipe is still raced internationally so there are new boats being made today.
New Boats and Dealers
(poke around this ^ website to see if you can find used equipment for sale).
The bad news is that a brand new mast is likely more than you have spent on your boat to date.
I hope you can find a used Snipe mast.
If you can't find a Snipe mast you might consider a mast from a similar sized boat (Lightning 19'?...) which could be cut down and spreaders re-adjusted.
As I recall masts were once made out of Sitka Spruce?
