Canoe Sailing?

Hello all, I'm looking to fit a canoe out for sailing. Are there any sort of internet resources on this? All I'm able to find so far is historical references for polynesian sailing canoes which is not even remotely what I'm looking for. I just want to sail lakes, rivers, small bays, etc. I'm looking for information mast location, outriggers, installed flotation and so on and so forth.

Thanks for any help you can give

Scott

There are references to Sailing canoes in the U.S., Canada & Europe. But you may have to ferret them out.
Some of the canoes have lee boards and some have center or dagger boards. And the sails vary widely also.
So you have a wonderful choice of how you want to rig your canoe.
Have Fun!!

Old town sell or used to sell a sail rig for canoes. They are easy to make also. and you can use a sail from a windsurfer or other type of craft. Most canoe sails are around 45 sq ft If I remember right. There is also a book called "canoe rig" Amazon.com: Canoe Rig: The Essence and the Art : Sailpower for Antique and Traditional Canoes (9780937822579): Todd Bradshaw: Books I had a 1955 wood canvas old town sailing canoe but never built the sail rig. sold it 2 yrs ago. Good luck.. plan on getting wet!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Chances are, I'll just experiment and build my own rig from scratch. Should be a lot of fun!

I sail a canoe, I was in her on monday. Mine is a lightweight 14' double-paddle canoe, 28" beam. She has a BSD sailrig in her, a bit tall for such a light boat. In adddition to my weight, a cinderblock forward of the mast helps keep us upright, and improves tacking. There is a canoe sailing forum on yahoo, with numerous photos of different styles. Start in warm water, light breezes, close to shore. Swimming from your canoe is a common result of sailing it.
