Let's hear it for the US Government

I am doing detailed planning for a circumnav starting in the fall and I am completely blown away by the remarkable free cruising resources that are available online from the US Government - pilot charts, sailing directions, etc, etc. They are listed at Maritime Safety Information The generous provision of all this information will save me a considerable amount of money and insure that I have a higher level of preparedness than I would otherwise.

If only the Canadian government (I am Canadian btw) had such an enlightened view of its role.

Sounds like the trick is to cruise in American waters and then head to Canada when you break a leg.

The way I've been getting my "free" cruising resources is the local library. Between the university library and the municipal libraries, there are plenty of cruising guides and lots of charts. Many of the charts are old, but Canada does publish Notices to Mariners.

Just one more reason why "everyone" wants to get in.

Guess who pays for the rescue mission when someone gets it wrong. This stuff is affordable insurance for the government.
