help me stop the rocking

i have a problem with by boat.

very often wen at anchor or on the mooring ball we will start this very pronounced rolling from side to side. most of the time we are the only boat in the area doing this.. all the other masts are sitting very still...

our boat is a 1966 sagitta 30 double ender full keel with a rear hung rudder.
4500lbs lead in keel and 9500lbs displacement..

i am thinking that it happens when the tide forces the boat to not be in line with the wind....the waves then come in on a quarter and the rolling starts.

how can we stop this.. it makes overnight trips a real headache, and can be inconvenient when on the ball....

please help...

Perhaps the reason is that your boat is more sensitive to the current direction than the others. Have you tried locking the rudder a little bit to the side to "steer" her towards the incoming sea?

Perhaps you might splash an anchor of your beam on the waveward side?

we have tried locking the rudder and had some limited success..

i will give the 2nd anchor a try and see what we can achieve with that..

i was hoping for a solution that will not have to be changed with every tide change....
thanks for the ideas so far...

"to not be in line with the wind"
Perhaps a small riding sail. That's usually a triangular small sail rigged between the backstay and the boom/topping lift, it serves to keep your stern "downwind" so your bow is pointing into the wind.
There are also "rocker stoppers" and if you look at those, you can jerry-rig something similar.

You could also try anchoring from the stern. We had a Nonsuch 30 that sailed like crazy when anchored from the bow but did not move at all when anchored from the stern. If you are going to try a riding sail you want one that is big enough to make a difference - it also needs to be cut entirely flat.

I've read that using a snubber bridle to the midship cleat will set your bow to windward. Bridle the same size as the rode attached with a Prusik knot, or triple sliding hitch. The Prusik Knot or Triple Sliding Hitch

Use 'Flopper Stoppers', they usually reduce the roll of a vessel at anchor or at sea.
