When is it time to refit your boat

I have a 1981 sailboat that passed its engine, hull, and rigging surveys. Other than the original electronics and the need to replace some cracked scupper hoses, the boat is in good shape. I plan on keeping the boat for as long as I can sail it, 15+ years. So when should I consider a keel to rigging refit of the boat?

Ocean Freedom.

I would also say work on it as needed--or maybe just before needed, if possible A good starter on a 30-yr-old boat, especially if it has a cored deck, is to rebed all the hardware, including stanchions, chainplates, etc. That should take a bit of your time, but you'll know it's all good then. It's been my experience, that any original electrical, mechanical, or plastic exposed to the sun will not be shy about calling out for attention.

Anytime the work scope gets beyond a couple of weeks or so on the hard or includes serious systemic issues necessitating major repair, like fixing that wet core or all of the chainplate leaks. When the band-aid's no longer keep ya ahead of the maintenance curves or work, it's time.

Other than standing rigging - IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

The answer would be different if you plan to do some serious offshore passages.
