Rudder Problem
Hello!
I have a Catalina 30 whose rudder is cracked from water intrusion. Someone suggested grinding out the cracks and repairing them with fiberglass cloth. I also came across a post that mentioned pulling the rudder off, and splitting it in order to repair any damage that may be unseen from the outside.
Which option do you guys think I should do?
I drilled small holes below the cracks about two months ago to allow any water inside to drain. I also found where the water was getting in (i think). There was a small chip next to the rudder post. When it rained, water from the cockpit would run down the post and into the chip.
If I should pull the rudder, is there anything I should be cautious of before hand?? Are there bearing around the rudder post or anything? How difficult is removing the rudder?
Thanks everyone!
